Greece is not yet a member of the Commission. But there are positive signs that the Greek Government might join and defend the whales!



The International Whaling Commission will be meeting soon to decide the fate of the whales.

Last year, the pro-whaling Japanese government won a simple majority resolution by only 1 vote: 33 to 32.

Every single vote is crucial this year. We're continuing efforts to get Denmark to vote for the whales, but right now, it is very important to encourage Greece to join the IWC on time for the next annual meeting of IWC in Alaska on May 31st.

As you can see, time is very short, we are only 60 days away from the meeting that will determine the future of whales.

You can help a lot to speed up this process. You just have to print a message to the Greek Govt. Take a picture of yourself holding it, and then upload your picture here as a comment.

It’s very simple and fun to do! Please don’t forget to add your country’s name to the message. Your supporting action will show that the whole world cares about Greece joining the IWC to defend the whales.

The Greek text says “May 2007: Greece goes against whaling”.

We will then print out the pictures and present them to the person in the Greek Government in Athens responsible for the IWC application.

The goal is to have as many pictures as possible, so invite as many friends as possible!

The Methimnaios Wine, the wine of Lesvos that has acquired international fame, will take part in events that will become in each corner of island coming close to Lesvos public. These events are following: – Friday of 14 July from 23:00 and up to late, sampling of Methimneos in the Bar Restaurant Giraffe in Kratigos. – From Thursday of 20 July up to Sunday of 23 July and from the 8 afternoon until the 12 evening, attendance of Methimneos in the Feast of Ouzo of the Municipality of Mitilini at the Epano Scala. – Friday of 28 July from the 9 evening up to late, sampling of Methimneos in the Bar Restaurant Barracuda in Haramida beach. The event co-organise the Methimneos and the Barracuda bar. – Friday 3 August and hour 7 the afternoon, presentation of Methimneos in the Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri. It will follow projection of French cinematographic adaptation of book "the Naked Girl” of writer Nikos Athanasiadi titled "L'arbre sous la mer" (the Tree under the Sea), that is reported in the Sigri. The event co-organises the Methimneos and the Museum. All the old and new friends of Methimneos, are welcome in these events, with which they will have the possibility of coming in personal contact with his producers and are informed by first hand for this 100% Lesvos wine, that was recently characterized from international fame American specialist Miles Lambert-Go'cs, as "one of the better red wines of Aegean, remarkable between the wines of the entire Mediterranean". At the same time with these events, the visiting wine factory of Methimneos in Hydira, that already it has opened for conducted tours from 1 July, will remain open for the common until 30 September, daily from 9 in the morning until the 6 afternoon.

In the frame of Naval Week, the Association of Amateur Fishermen of Mitilini organises the afternoon of following Wednesday of 28 June, competition of fishing outside from the harbour of city. On Sunday the 25th of June will be realised in Agia Paraskevi of Lesvos from the Agricultural Association "the Progress" the Bull festival in the memory of thaumaturgy of Saint Haralampos and is organised by the Agricultural Association "the Progress" continuously from 1774. The feast includes the adornment and sacrifice of the bull, the cooking of traditional food from the meat with wheat, horse race, live traditional music and abundant ouzo.

Mr Ilias Mefyris organises a photographic exposition of drained plants at the Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest. The exposition will be entertained from the 4th until 14th of April in the Centre of Information in Mitilini, and then will be transported in the installations of the Museum in Sigri from April 16 till June 5. The report includes impressive photographs with some of the most characteristic types of Lesvos flora and compositions with drained plants in tables.
